Welcome to Sublime Alpacas!
But, wait…what’s an alpaca?
Alpacas are members of the camelid family. They are related to llamas and camels. In the 1980′s, alpacas were imported into North America from the high Andes region of South America, and entrepreneurs began to breed them for their superior fiber and to show. After a period of years, the importations stopped, and now most alpacas in this country - including the Sublime gang – are born in the USA!
In ancient times, alpaca fiber was used to make garments for Peruvian royalty and was known as the “fiber of gods”. Alpaca fiber is lightweight and warmer than wool. It is hypo-allergenic and it doesn’t itch. It makes beautiful garments and fashion accessories and is a favorite of knitters, crocheters and hand spinners. And it is versatile! For example, following the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, alpaca fiber was used to help with the clean up.
Hold on! there’s more.
Alpacas are wonderful animals! They have a curious and gentle disposition that is a pleasure to experience. When you meet alpacas you will find yourself enchanted. Many people say they feel more relaxed when they are around alpacas. It’s paca-magical!
Not only that, alpacas are “green”!
They have soft, padded feet that tread lightly on the ground and do not tear up pasture grasses, supporting rapid regrowth of green landscape and preventing soil erosion. Alpacas nibble the tops of vegetation rather that tearing it up at the roots, which also helps to preserve greenscape. They are modest eaters and replenish their environment with a true organic fertilizer in the form of alpaca manure, or “beans”, which are virtually odor free. Alpaca manure can also be added to compost piles and makes a nutrient-rich garden fertilizer, as well.
